SCEPTRE U278W-4000R Review – 200$ 4K IPS Monitor?

SCEPTRE U278W-4000R is a 200$ 4K IPS monitor, which is something that’s never been heard of to be honest. This is truly a spectacular and remarkable piece of hardware, offering an insane value for the price. It’s almost unbelievable how Sceptre managed to create this great performing, 4K monitor for such entry-level price. But where did Sceptre had to cut down to fit in that budget-friendly price, or did it have to cut something at all? Lets find out:

SCEPTRE U278W-4000R

Strong points:

  • Build quality is actually very good. Sceptre uses high quality metal frame alongside metal stand that keep monitor relatively sturdy;
  • Sceptre provides a razor-sharp & crystal-clear image quality of 4K resolution with 163 PPI (pixels per inch) pixel density, delivering superb level of clarity & detail on-screen;
  • 5ms response time does relatively great job of providing quick graphics rendering, meaning that transitions between fast-moving objects and scenes on-screen appear crisp & detailed, without the annoying effect of ghosting or smearing; Sceptre u278w-4000r
  • The monitor itself is very thin;
  • Thin bezel design allows for great multi-display setups;
  • The monitor itself is very easy to put together;
  • Comes with screwdriver which surprisingly has pretty good build quality;

  • IPS panel delivers great color reproduction. Colors are highly consistent, accurate & natural looking while 1000:1 contrast ratio creates deep blacks & bright whites. While not on the par with other high-end IPS panel implementations out there, Sceptre still does offer surprisingly great color performance nonetheless, in fact much better than most people would expect, exceeding a lot of other cheaper IPS panels. The quality of IPS panel used here is very good, especially when You consider the price on the monitor;
  • Viewing angles are somewhat solid, users are getting nice picture quality without any color shifting & distortion looking at the screen from more subtle viewing angles, however at more extreme angles there will be slight downgrade;
  • OSD menu is user-friendly & comfortable to navigate through;
  • Low Blue Light technology enhances user’s viewing comfort by filtering out harmful blue light which can cause eye strain, fatigue, irritation & other possible sight related issues that might occur from long sessions in front of the monitor; Sceptre u278w-4000r
  • Comes with pre-calibrated picture pre-set modes such as RTS, FPS, Movie for different gaming/viewing experiences;
  • Works great with PC, xbox one x & PS4 Pro;
  • Great variety of connectivity options;
  • Very affordable (cheapest 4K monitor I have seen yet);

Neutral points:

  • Comes with 2 x 3 Wat built-in speakers that deliver mediocre sound quality at best, however for more immersive gameplay experience please consider buying external speaker set or pair of headphones;
  • 250nit brightness is somewhat decent and will leave users will relatively bright images, however a boost to 300nit brightness level would be a very nice addition;

Negative points:

  • Lack of height, swivel & pivot adjustable stand. Users only have option to tilt the monitor;
  • No AdaptiveSync technology;
  • Lack of USB ports;

Conclusion:

All in all, Sceptre absolutely blew a lot of people away with its incredible value for the very budget-friendly price that it sells for. In fact, it’s almost unbelievable how Sceptre managed to deliver such great performing 4K IPS monitor for 200$. It has razor-sharp 4 resolution, beautiful color reproduction, great build quality, Low Blue Light technology, 5 ms response time & it even comes with screwdriver that’s actually good quality. It doesn’t come with fully adjustable stand nor AdaptiveSync technology unfortunately, but some cutdowns are to be expected obviously, considering the price of the monitor.

  1. 4K for $200! How did you find this.

    Its amazing that this monitor has all the features of a higher spec brand such as Samsung or Sony.

    I love the design too, it doesn’t actually look cheap.

    Could you please provide a little more info on the actual picture quality?

    Does it have good contrast? This is important to me when playing games.

    Thanks,
    Michael.

    1. Hey Micheal 😉

      Thank You for taking Your time to read & comment on my review, I truly appreciate it 😉 ! I am very glad You have enjoyed my content.

      My first reaction when I have discovered this monitor was the exact same as Yours, I simply couldn’t believe in what I was seeing! 200$ for 4K monitor?! Right of the bat I thought that there has to be some kind of catch here… perhaps some kind of significant downgrade or something, however I was super surprised after analyzing this monitor to find out that that wasn’t the case at all! In fact, it is a high-quality monitor from ”bottom to the top”, from build quality, to color performance, to design- it performs great in many areas! I was very impressed with this monitor and 200$ price just blew me out of the water, this is insane value for the money You pay… As far as contrast goes, well it is standart IPS 1000:1 contrast ratio, it sticks to this target and is capable of delivering deep, oily black levels as well as nice & bright whites.

  2. Great find… $200 is a fantastic price! Shame about the sound, but I guess we can’t have it all. What speakers would you recommend, have you reviewed any that would be a good match with this monitor?

    Also, I’ve heard mixed things about Sceptre, but it sounds like they are better now than some people have given them credit for. Definitely number one for price, but is the customer service OK?

    1. Hello Lucy,

      Thank You for taking Your time to read & comment on my article, I appreciate it.

      The price is truly fantastic! I was absolutely blown aways when I have dicovered and reviewed this monitor. It manages to deliver very good perforamnce in many aspects. Everything from image quality, to build quality, to design etc. it shines and suprises with great perfomrance, while maintatining a very budget-friendly price tag. It is truly an amazing value for the price it sells for. As far as speakers go, unfourtunetaly I don’t have any article regarding speakers because I’ve dedicated this site only to monitors, so I can’t really recommend any. Judging by different customer reviews for Sceptre products it seems that the customer service is good and they are always willing to cooperateand help resolve the issue.

  3. A 4k for just 200$? are you serious? Getting a 4k for this price seems to be impossible in today’s world. This will be one of the best options available for my office as here I will get a 4k monitor compared to other monitors where I will get nothing close to this in this price range.
    Thanks for the information buddy.

    1. Hey Hari,

  4. The 4K Is a bargain at $200 considering the amount of specifications it has on it! I agree the somethings had to give but are you really that bothered that the monitor does not swivel considering what the experience has to offer?

    Because you have listed the sound quality as a negative can you attach your own speakers to the monitor? I expect there was not snout room in the thin body to house anymore electronics!

    Whats your gaming experience been like on the 4K, have you had a chance to experience it?

    1. Hey Darren,

      I was simply blown away by how Sceptre managed to create such high quality, 4K IPS monitor with good looking design, great build quality with few useful features on top of that while maintatining that glorious 200$ price tag, it’s pretty crazy!

      I think we all can forgive Sceptre for not including fully adjustable stand here when You look at what kind of perforamnce it delivers in other areas, atlhough this monitor supports VESA wall mounting, therefor it is possible to mount it to the wall and use arm monitor stand to get full adjustment options.

      Yes, You can atach Your own speakers to the monitor via audio jack connectivity.

      If You have any qeustions feel free to message me anytime 😉

  5. Wow that’s a great looking monitor. I paid 500$ last year for my 27″ 1080p Dell monitor and it doesn’t nearly look as impressive as this one.

    Never heard of this brand, but I’m sure that they will become known more and more, if they can deliver such quality.I’m gonna bookmark this page for my next monitor upgrade.

    Good find!

  6. Wow, this is indeed an amazing high quality product for an unbelievable low price! And you are very right, when you want quality sound from a TV you have to attach an external speaker set. I have a Bose surround set with a woofer box plugged to my Smart TV. Thanks for finding this bargain!

  7. Hi! Great post! We’re currently planning for the kids’ Christmas presents and we’re looking into a gaming monitor for our eldest son. We, like many people, are on a budget, and I’ve come across your review at exactly the right moment. Poor sound quality shouldn’t be a problem as our son already uses gaming headphones. It’s not critical, but does the monitor frame come in different colors? If so, we could also look into a monitor for our daughter. 🙂

    Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hey Norman,

      sorry for the late reply. I am very hapy that You’ve found my review to be helpful 😉 As far as the monitor frame’s color variations go, I have checked multiple shops and I’ve only seen the standard metalic/grey color which is presented in my review, so as far as I am concerned there are no other colors to choose from. If You have any questions feel free to message me anytime!
